Special Constables seriously injured following town centre disturbance


An early morning incident in Colchester has left two Special Constables seriously injured, one remaining in hospital.

The Special Constables and police officers had responded to a disturbance in Colchester High Street at around 2:15am on Sunday, 13th January.

Whilst dealing with the incident, police report one of the Special Constables was kicked, headbutted and stamped on. He is currently in hospital awaiting surgery for a fractured jaw.

The other Special suffered a broken nose and split lip. Police have reported he has since been discharged from hospital.

Chief Inspector Shaun Kane of Essex Police, said in a Twitter post: “No Excuse! Disgusting assault on officers serving and protecting our Communities #Colchester. My thoughts and support are with both officers concerned. Cowardly attacks such as this will not be tolerated with our Policing resolve unwavering @SaferColchester.”


Two teenagers and a man have been arrested following the incident. A 20-year-old man and a 17-year-old, both from Clacton, were arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm.

A 17-year-old from Clacton was also arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker. All three remain in custody for questioning.
