New 420 space primary school proposed for Stanway

Consultation on a new 420 space primary school in Lakelands Stanway has been opened to the public by Essex County Council (ECC).

Residents can comment on the new proposed 420 space primary school to be built on Lakelands near Tollgate in Stanway, west Colchester.

Forecasts by ECC indicate there will be a need for up to 60 additional reception year places each year (also known as two forms of entry or 2FE) in the Lakelands and wider surrounding areas from September 2020.

Cllr. Ray Gooding, Cabinet Member for Education at ECC said: “The County Council must ensure that there is a school place every year for each child in Essex. In doing so we want to take every opportunity to allow more parents to send their child to their preferred school.

“There is predicted to be significant pressure on pupil places in Colchester over the next few years. We have been working with the local schools to address this need and have already expanded several primary schools across Colchester.

“Providing a new school remains a high priority. One area of Colchester that is predicted to grow substantially over the next few years as a result of new housing is Stanway.”

The final figure of children needing a primary school place will ultimately depend on the timing and phasing of the large-scale planned housing development which is being closely monitored by County Hall chiefs.

The consultation will seek views from the public on the proposals for the new primary school, with drop in sessions scheduled for October 11th and 12th at Stanway Village Hall, Villa Road between 3pm-5pm and 6pm-7:30pm on both days.

Funding for the proposed school is partly from contributions made by the housing developers, known as “section 106 contributions” and partly from basic need funding from ECC.

Ray added: “It is vital that we commission more school places in this area of Colchester and I invite you to let me have your views on this proposal so that these can be taken into account when a final decision is made later in the year.”

Consultation is open until mid-day on 26th October 2018 and can be accessed online at http://surveys.essexinsight.org.uk/lakelandsnewschool or by writing to Kevin Wilby – School Organisation Officer by email at school.organisation@essex.gov.uk

Alternatively, the public can submit consultation responses by mail to School Organisation Team, County Hall – E3, Market Road, Chelmsford CM1 1QH.

No decision has been made by ECC on the proposals and all views received will be considered prior to a final decision on the plans is made.

If a decision is made to proceed with the new primary school, a specification inviting proposals to sponsor the new provision will be published in the spring of 2019.
