On your marks, get set, Parkrun!

Calling 4 to 14 year-olds to get fit, have fun and meet new friends at the free Junior Parkrun in Colchester.

Every Sunday at Old Heath Recreation ground, a team of committed volunteers give up their Sunday morning to hold this fun, free event for children.

Junior Parkrun is an open-to-all abilities 2k run for juniors (4-14 year-olds only), aiming to get the younger generation into a fun and healthy lifestyle, as well as meeting new friends.

The Parkrun is organised by Debbie Brand, Event Director and together with her team of Run Directors sees over 100 children every week start their Sunday on a high.

Run Director, Karianne Marking said about the weekly event: “We are hoping that numbers will continue to rise as word gets out about what a fantastic and fun run it is.

“We are totally inclusive to all abilities. Children with both visible and hidden physical disabilities take part.

“The children choose to come out and run in, at times, very cold and wet weather.  Volunteers too, who donate their time so that we can put this on for the kids. It truly is community spirit at its finest.”

One of the keen runners is 5 year old Olivia who attends with her mum, Annette Oakman. When asked why she likes going to Junior Parkrun, Olivia said: “I like the Parkrun because I like running and running with mummy.  It’s really friendly and lots of children run.”

Annette added: “It’s a great atmosphere, lots of encouragement from the volunteers for those running at the front through to those walking at the back.”

The Junior Parkrun meets every Sunday at the cafe on Old Heath Recreation Ground.  Runners meet at 8:45am for a pre-race brief and warm up, ready to start running at 9:00am.

Participants need to register before the event.

Colchester Castle Parkrun for adults is held every Saturday at 9:00am, meeting at the park’s bandstand.
