Taylor Pearman, 21, from Braiswick, Colchester, is the first Briton ever to win a medal at the No gi jiu-jitsu World Championships.
Pearman, an ex pupil of Stanway School, beat five other fighters to rise to the very top of the competition and claim the Gold medal.
The event was held in Anaheim, California, on the outskirts of Los Angeles.
Taylor started training when 14 at the 9th Legion Training Centre in Wyncolls Road and is coached by Prof. Alain Pozo.
He is part of the Essex based ZR team which provide him with support as he travels the globe.
Pearman has followed up on his World Championship with a bronze medal at the European Championships in Lisbon, Portugal.
