Roads blocked and power cuts as very strong winds hit Essex


Very strong winds from Storm David hit Essex overnight with gusts reported up to 70mph.

In Colchester, a driver had a lucky escape when a tree fell blocking Mersea Road to traffic, bound for the town centre.

Colchester Police have contacted Essex Highways to assist with the removal however expect delays during rush hour.

Update 8:00am: Mersea Road fallen tree has now been cleared to the side of the road and the vehicle is being recovered.


Power cuts have been reported in parts of Colchester, including Great Tey and Marks Tey.

UK Power Networks advise contacting them 24/7 in the event of a power cut by calling 105 or texting POWER and your postcode to 80876.

A Met Office yellow weather warning for wind remains in place until 9:00am.
