Colchester lose 3-1 against old enemy.
Sky Bet League Two Player of the Month, Sammie Szmodics, scored his 13th of the season, but it was only a consolation goal as United were well beaten.
The U’s made three changes, Inniss back from injury, Murray and Szmodics recalled.
Colchester made the brighter start and almost took the lead; Guthrie testing Scott Brown with a header after 7 minutes. Mandron also had a half chance shortly afterwards.
But it was the chairboys who took the lead after 14 minutes when Akinfenwa nodded home a great cross from Craig Mackail-Smith.
Ryan Jackson’s long throws yet again caused problems and Ryan Inniss’ header almost crept in to equalise for the U’s but Brown pushed it round the post.
However, it was Colchester who went 2-0 down in the 24th minute. Mackail-Smith headed on and Cowan-Hall slotted home.
United had a great shout for a penalty when Mandron went over after a Nathan McGinley challenge, but referee John Busby was unmoved.
After the break Mandron had a fierce shot, brilliantly saved by Brown, but with Colchester pushing forwards, it was Wycombe who predictably struck the killer blow as Luke O’Nien fired a left bullet past Walker, who stood no chance.
Szmodics’ goal proved too little too late, leaving Colchester with their first back to back defeats since September and no win in 4.
How the U’s react, will surely determine whether this is a genuine promotion bid or not.
