Superb Colchester 3-1 victory over Exeter

Fantastic first half display secures important win against promotion rivals.

Sammy Szmodics produced a wonderful display, scoring two, hitting the post and it was his shot that was put through his own net, by Exeter’s Archibald-Henville.

The win has lifted Colchester level on points with 7th place Coventry, as they continued their fine league form.

In recent weeks, United have beaten top sides Exeter and Lincoln. They were unlucky against Notts County.

U’s manager John McGreal, hailed Szmodics’ performance.: “He’s a real goalscorer and deserves all the credit. He’s really developing.

“He seems to have matured a lot. With his skill, he can go anywhere in the game.”

Szmodics himself was pleased with things at the other end of the pitch: “Although the lads will be disappointed to concede, we looked really solid at the back.

“I nearly had a hat-trick, when it hit the post. I thought I’d scored and turned away. I thought it was in!”

Colchester head off to Swindon on Friday night in what will be another test of their promotion credentials.

Swindon lie two places above Colchester, but only on goal difference with both teams on 32 points.
