Colchester United fell to their first league defeat of the season after being beaten at home by Northampton Town this afternoon (Saturday, August 25).
Both teams were goalless after a lacklustre first half, but it was Town who scored first on the 48th minute.
Matt Crooks was unchallenged down the centre, sliding his long-range shot past the U’s keeper into the bottom corner of the net.
The U’s came close to an equaliser on 79 minutes, with substitute Luke Norris heading his shot off the bar.
Billy Waters doubled the lead for Northampton in the first of six minutes of stoppage time to seal the win in front of the travelling fans.
The U’s pulled one back just before the final whistle, with a goal-bound shot from Sammie Szmodics saved only to cannon in off Town defender Aaron Pierre for an own goal.
Onwards and upwards. Next up for the U’s: Away to Cheltenham Town on Saturday September 1.
