Colchester United 0 Accrington Stanley 1

The U’s play-off hopes took a blow this afternoon (Saturday 7th April), losing by a single goal to top of the table Stanley.

There was very little by way of action at either end in the first half, the U’s making no changes to the side that defeated Forest Green on Easter Monday.

Mandron was denied a close-range shot on the 10th minute and down at the other end Johnson headed over the bar from a 12th minute corner.

Walker denied Hughes’ close-range volley on the 13th minute and Stanley midfielder Conneely came closest to scoring in the first half with a shot on 28 minutes.

In the 33rd minute, Mandron showed some spark for the U’s, his long-range shot being cleared and Szmodics not able to capitalise on the rebound.

A slow start to the second half was livened up 6 minutes in, with Stanley keeper Chapman seeing off Wright’s goal-bound shot. Four minutes later Walker was forced into action, blocking Jackson’s shot.

However, nothing could stop Kee’s fortuitous goal  in the 63rd minute.  Walker had seen off Clark’s shot, only for the rebound to ricochet off Kee and roll into the empty net for his 22nd goal of the season.

Walker handled two more attempts for Stanley to double their lead in the 74th and 76th minutes courtesy of Jackson and Kee.  The final action of note came when U’s man Wright volleyed at keeper Chapman for a relatively easy save.

This came as United’s first defeat in five games and top of the table Stanley’s seventh successive victory.

Next up for Colchester United: Notts County at home on Saturday 14th April.
