U’s promotion push back on following successful Easter weekend programme.
Following the 2-1 defeat of Luton on Good Friday, the U’s are now within four points of the play-off places with five games remaining.
United got off to an impressive start, with Wright scoring after only 19 seconds following Szmodics’ break down the left.
Forest Green Rovers equalised on 37 minutes when Reid put away a penalty after Eastman’s foul on Hollis.
United couldn’t capitalise on two excellent chances in the first half for Wright and Mandron and Grubb’s 25th minute free kick never threatened the U’s goal.
Goals from the off were the order of the day for Colchester, with Stevenson blasting a 20-yard shot into the corner of the net, just 85 seconds into the second half.
Rovers almost drew level courtesy of Grubb on 50 minutes and the U’s were denied a 70th minute third goal thanks to Wright’s attempt being cleared off the line.
Following a late spell of pressure from Rovers, the last real goal attempt came from Murray on the 85th minute, with a shot that fell easily to keeper Collins.
Next up for the U’s: Accrington Stanley at home on Saturday 7th April.
