Colchester United played out a goalless draw against a stubborn Morecambe side, they perhaps would have expected to beat, based on current league form.
The good news was that United extended their unbeaten run to five games, but the match could hardly be described as a classic encounter.
Sammie Szmodics, who scored last week’s winner at Barnet from the subs bench, came into the starting line up along with Tom Lapslie, as the only two changes from the side that won away last weekend.
Colchester’s Drey Wright, himself a substitute this week, came closest to settling the match when he crashed a 25 yard screamer against the bar, with only three minutes remaining, the rebound appearing to be handled by Morecambe defender Aaron McGowen in the box.
United’s appeals were waved away and the points shared, but the U’s will feel these were two points dropped in their bid to reach the playoffs.
